Mark Williams, MD, sees many “faces” of influenza on a daily basis, as everyone 6 months of age and older is recommended for annual influenza immunization by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, especially those with chronic lung conditions.1 As an expert in lung health, Dr. Williams knows influenza is a serious respiratory disease and recommends all his patients get vaccinated every year. Combined with pneumonia, influenza is the nation’s eighth leading cause of death.9 However, one year due to a heavy workload, he missed his office’s vaccination clinic. He didn’t get a flu shot, and ended up contracting the virus. As a result of his illness, Dr. Williams is more committed than ever to reminding people about the importance of getting vaccinated. It is especially important for health-care professionals to get immunized because research shows that they can spread the highly contagious influenza virus to patients in their care.1 Dr. Williams has joined the American Lung Association’s Faces of Influenza campaign to encourage others, including fellow health-care professionals, to be immunized to help protect themselves, their patients, and loved ones from the influenza virus.
